The project objective was to reduce natural gas emissions to the atmosphere caused by controlled releases of natural gas from distribution operations. The project was driven by the positive impact to customers and the increased public concern regarding greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve the project objective, NICOR Technology Inc. had to design, build, and field-test a natural gas recovery device for capturing and reusing gas that was currently released to the atmosphere. This device was also designed to temporarily store gas in a volume tank and, if necessary, transport it to another location where injection would have been possible. NICOR was targeting a design process that used off-the-shelf components whenever possible to minimize the uncertainty associated with design and fabrication of new components. The prototype system is applicable to a wide range of pipe sizes and pressures (up to 125 psig) and it uses traditional gas stopping and bleeding methods.
