Controlled Testing of Emissions Quantification Technologies Continues for NYSEARCH at SoCal Gas

Following on controlled tests performed in spring 2015 at PSE&G and significant analysis performed by NYSEARCH, a decision was made in the fall to conduct more controlled tests to gather more data regarding accuracy, precision and conditions that impact the application of various technologies. The technologies that were selected in early 2015 through a competitive RFP include two that use Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy and one that uses laser technology. In these efforts, measurements of methane concentrations are made and integrated with wind speed and direction to convert the readings to flow rates. All three technology service providers have agreed to test at SoCal under controlled conditions and the plan is to gather data in categories of very low, low, medium and high flow rates. NYSEARCH plans to complete these tests and analysis of results by spring. Depending on the outcome, next steps include testing the most promising technology(ies) in actual gas distribution company field conditions.
