This project approaches the overall industry with research results to incorporate into national standards. It addresses industry groups to communicate new technology and innovation intended on incorporating into national standards for all to benefit. PHMSA supported "raising the bar" to improve service and safety to pipeline customers' through participation on ASTM Committees to change strengthen, update and improve standards that effect pipeline systems.
A specific interest is with determining the effects of direct UV rays on PE pipe material. The objective of this portion of the project is to create performance-based test methods to assess the condition of PE pipe that has been stored outdoors. When test methods have been developed and verified, they can be presented to industry and regulartory groups to provide technical substance for changing time limit based standards to test method based standards. The same industry and regulatory groups involved in Phase I PE Pipe Standards project are the same groups that will be approached to address this change from PE pipe "expiration date" to performance based testing
