The objective and driver for this research was to better understand and determine the effects of potential damages that could be introduced resulting from various types of internal inspection devices and their impact on the continued safe operations of PE piping materials. It is generally recognized that the stresses on the inner diameter are tensile as compared to those on the outside which are compressive. As a result, of most concern would be potential damages (scratches) on the inner surface of the PE pipe wall that are severe enough to adversely affect the long performance by initiating and/or accelerating the slow crack growth failure mechanism.
