Millennium Project Number: M-2005-012

Project Title: Development of Corrosion Camera

Project Start Date: November 2005

Projected End Date: 2008

Technical Details:

The objective of the project is to develop optical techniques for the detection of corrosion in uncoated and coated metallic pipes used in the gas industry. To date, gas companies continue to experience the problem of metallic pipe corrosion in the natural gas distribution and transmission system. In some situations, such as with overhead bridges, pipe location inspection and protection of the pipe can be difficult. As a result, the corrosion camera is an instrument to enable gas companies to observe and record corrosion activity in difficult situations.

In addition to the underground insepction of pipelines using the above techniques, the development of a corrosion camera can facilitate the inspection of pipelines in above ground applications such as bridges or other exposed areas. Also the corrosion camera will have the ability to provide a history of images that may be able to, not only infer wall loss in the pipe but also determine the stage of corrosion that the pipe's surface area is experiencing.
