Project Title: Long-Range Guided Wave Survey and Monitoring of Cased Pipelines at Crossings using MagnetoStrictive Sensor (MsS)

Project Start Date: 2005

Projected End Date: 2008

Technical Details:

Develop a Long Range Guided Ultrasonic inspection tool that offers a potential for simple, low cost installation of sensors to allow pipe integrity monitoring of cased pipelines from above th surface. Long range ultrasonic testing is a scanning tool to detect external and internal corrosion and coating defects in gas pipes. It is particularly useful where traditional DA technologies cannot be used.

The MagnetoStrictive Sensor (MsS) system uses guide waves and incorporates sensing strips instead of transducer materials and procedures to provide valuable information about size and growth rate of pipe defects. It provides the same general signal energy as traditional LRUT but the MsS system uses materials and an approach that is claimed to make it more cost effective and practical to install on a permanent basis. The proposed MsS system would provide defect location, type of anomaly and defect size by cross sectional area. It has the potential for monitoring over time the growth rate and relative size of the defect. The work is producing procedures for permanent installation and for monitoring readings over time. Issues being addressed include material stability due to changes in pressure, sensor sensitivity and demagnetization, and material bonding strength.
