Millennium Project Number: M-2002-012

Project Title: PEX Pipe Project: Comparison of PEX and PE Pipe

Project Start Date: 2002

Projected End Date: 2004

Technical Details:

The objective of this project is to conduct an evaluation of crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) material to assess the suitability of this material for use in gas distribution networks. This evaluation will compare and demonstrate the performance of PEX relative to common types of polyethylene (PE) used for natural gas distribution. This project will benefit the funding companies by providing laboratory and hands-on field data related to the performance of PEX. These results will help demonstrate the benefits of PEX and thus allow NYSEARCH members to understand how best to utilize this advanced plastic pipe material.

Crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) has material properties that are attractive for natural gas applications. These properties include excellent scratch resistance and mechanical stability at elevated temperatures. PEX has been used in Europe for natural gas distribution and, just recently, it is being tested in the US for special applications including horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting / splitting, and bridge crossings.
