Technical Details: A field-ready prototype was manufactured. Con Ed field tested the prototype in 2004 and 2005. It was found that the Lift Assist adds considerable weight to the jackhammer and creates a moment around the bit/pavement contact point which causes the jackhammer to lean towards the operator when the Lift Assist is deployed. The gas industry operators indicated that the Lift Assist helps lift the jackhammer in order to remove the bit from the pavement. Other feedback was that the Lift Assist design/mechanism should be incorporated integral to jackhammer itself, which should reduce the overall weight of the lift assembly and eliminate the moment created.
