Technical Details:
The objective of this project is to develop Gas Net™, a stand-alone, distribution sensor network for real-time monitoring of live gas mains and real-time wireless communication of sensor information to utility operators and other personnel. The system consists of sensor pods installed inside the pipe and capable of measuring in-situ process variables in real-time and transmitting wirelessly back to a monitoring station. The pod design is flexible as to allow the exchange of sensors and to allow addition of sensor pods in the GasNet ™ network without requiring any central station hardware or software changes.
The project is structured in three phases; the first is a proof-of-concept phase using off-the-shelf components, the second involves the miniaturization of the system and the field demonstration of an alpha prototype system, while phase III involves the development of a beta-grade system and a field demonstration on a large scale.
